After an update to the latest 3.5.xxxx version of  Skype a lot of people (I’ve seen 3 including myself) are having problems starting up Skype. It crashes with the error#3601 which apparently has nagged the application for a while. Some say it’s a Video drive problem, same say it’s Windows fault but it looks like it was tracked down to a simple character in the config.xml file that resides in the user’s profile.  I followed the  instructions on the skype developers forum https://developer.skype.com/jira/browse/SCW-512 and it’s all working now. There are  more details on the Developer’s Forum but to save you a few clicks here is what I did, as instructed by the developers.

– go to C:/Documents and settings/<your user>/Application Data/Skype/<your profile>
– Edit the file called config.xml (open with notepad)
– on the line <ShowTime>1</ShowTime> change “1” for “0” and save file
– Start Skype
