The Mac OS X System Error Code -1712 is a bit of an ambiguous one as all that it means is that the application has timed out.
We got Error Code -1712 when we tried to run Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection on one of our staff’s Macbook.
To diagnose this error in more detail we opened up the “Force Quit Applications” with command + option + esc. The program that I was trying to open was already open (RDC), so I force quit it in the list.
After force quitting the offending application I was then able to start it again, without coming up against the “Error code -1712” error again.

If you force shut down then try the program again it will work.

if i do so, will i lose the information i haven’t saved?
??
Yes, unfortunately if you have not been regularly saving your information, or if the program has not be auto-saving the information, you will loose the data by doing a force quit.
great! it worked!
I don’t understand why Apple always put an error number in dialogs, rather than a brief description.
Thanks, though, it did indeed work.
Glad that it helped Peter, it would certainly be much easier to troubleshoot if there was a description rather than some random numbers …
Thank you sir, you are a genius and a life saver.
The code -1712 appears every time I open Safari (it appears one or two times). It is not that annoying since Safari opens anyway. But I would like to know how to get rid of it (I have an Imac 2007 under Maverick)
worked for me many thanks

Glad that it helped!
I have an early 2008 MacBook Pro and I recently updated iTunes to the latest version. After the installation it replaced my old iTunes version into the new one. Unfortunately, the application did not open. It had a locked sign on the iTunes logo application. So I decided to delete the new ITunes version and download the old version. I am able to open the iTunes application but it keeps freezing right away. I have force quit the application several times and even reinstalled the iTunes application a couple of times and nothing seems to work. How can I fix this problem? Thank you!
